This year is very unusual for the wiccan calendar. Last year the winter solstice, which fell on December 21, was also the date of the full moon for that month and, as if that was not enough, it was a lunar eclipse, which is a rare occurrence. The last time that both events happened at the same time was December 21 in 1638-some 372 years ago, and it will not happen again for at least 84 years from now in 2094, which will also be on December 21. This event even made the news, as it is such a rare occurrence.
Unfortunately, there was an air of disdain and ridicule as many made the mistake of believing that this would result in disastrous events, mistakenly thinking that it was a bad omen. Omens are portents of important events. For a Christian a certain arrangement of stars on December 25 would be of great significance, due to its association with the conditions of the birth of Jesus Christ. For wiccans the omen is neither positive nor negative, but it is considered a special event. The individual Wiccan must decide what the nature of omens mean to them personally, which is something that current events or the state of the world in general can influence. By itself, it would be enough to cause consideration, but the next wiccan sabbat added to that perception.
Super Moon and Spring Equinox
On March 20 the Spring Equinox occurred. This is the Wiccan Sabbat of Eostara (related to Easter). What is unusual is that the night before, on Saturday, March 19 there a rare lunar event, called a “Super Moon.” This is the coincidence of a Full moon with what is known as “Lunar Perigee.” The result is the largest full moon in over 20 years. This is the second rare and unusual lunar occurrence connected with a Wiccan Sabbat in a row.
Now the power and portent of the omen involved is amplified. It is not being ignored that Japan has just experienced the worst earthquake in history and that the quakes are still occurring. Belief is an individual matter and this goes for Wiccans as well. Personally, I never discount anything, as there is just too much that we do not know to dismiss anything. The Mayan Calendar says that on December 21 2012 we will pass from one age to another, which will also be the winter solstice. It will not be a full moon, however.
